Built on Craftsmanship. Grown Through Experience.
Day One Specialties is a family-focused general contracting and custom building company based in Alexander, New York. The company began with hands-on woodworking and custom furniture. Today, that same craftsmanship extends to remodeling and complete home construction across Western New York and the Greater Rochester area.
Meet Abe Outten of Day One Specialties
Abe Outten is the owner of Day One Specialties. He is also a husband and father. His approach to the business reflects his family background in the trades and years spent developing his own craft.
A Family Background in the Trades
Building has been part of Abe's family for generations. He comes from a long line of masonry experience. In addition, his father worked in general contracting. That background gave Abe an early connection to practical, hands-on work.
Over time, that experience became part of the foundation for Day One Specialties. Today, the company handles projects ranging from one-of-a-kind woodwork to complete residential construction. Although the scale may change, the basic approach remains the same. Build it well, respect the details and create a finished result the homeowner can enjoy.
Craftsmanship
Good work begins with the details. That applies to the work hidden behind the walls and the finishes everyone sees.
Integrity
Homeowners deserve clear conversations and thoughtful options. They also deserve an approach centered on doing the work properly.
Your Vision
Every home does not need to look the same. Instead, Day One Specialties works to understand your ideas and bring them into the finished project.
How Day One Specialties Grew With the Craft
Day One Specialties did not begin by trying to do everything at once. Instead, the business developed through hands-on work and increasingly complex projects. As the work grew, so did the ability to bring more of a homeowner's vision together under one contractor.
Custom Furniture Built One Piece at a Time
Day One Specialties began with custom furniture and woodworking. Abe built furniture, barn doors and other custom pieces for individual homes. As a result, measurements, joinery, materials and finishing details all became an important part of the work.
Details That Make a Piece Feel Custom
Working at that scale develops an eye for details that can be easy to overlook. For example, wood species, grain, proportions and hardware can transform the final appearance. Stain and paint colors matter too.
Custom color matching also became part of the work. Therefore, new pieces could complement the character already present in a home instead of looking out of place.
Custom Bed Swings
That woodworking background remains part of Day One Specialties today. In particular, Abe builds handcrafted custom bed swings for porches, patios and backyard retreats.

From Custom Cabinets to Complete Rooms
Furniture naturally led into larger built-in projects. Custom kitchen cabinets brought Abe's woodworking into one of the most important rooms in the home. From there, the work expanded beyond individual pieces and into complete spaces.
Complete Kitchen & Bathroom Remodeling
Today, Day One Specialties can handle full kitchen and bathroom remodeling. As a result, cabinetry, flooring, trim, tile and painting can be considered as parts of one design. Other finishing details can also be coordinated with the larger project.
This approach gives homeowners more freedom to focus on the finished room. Meanwhile, they do not have to think of every feature as a completely separate project.
Keeping the Custom Mindset
Even as the projects became larger, the custom mindset remained. First, understand what the homeowner wants. Then, work through the practical details needed to create it. Finally, bring those choices together in a finished space that feels intentional.
Building Homes From the Ground Up
The same business that started by building individual pieces can now take on an entire home. Day One Specialties has grown into full-service general contracting. Projects can include additions, major renovations and new home construction.
Bringing the Stages Together
A complete build involves many moving parts. For instance, the work may include framing, insulation, drywall and windows. Kitchens, bathrooms, painting and trim follow as the home takes shape.
Because Day One Specialties can work across the larger project, those stages can be considered together. Consequently, the homeowner's vision does not have to be treated as a collection of unrelated rooms and finishes.
Farmhouse Character to Modern Design
The finished style can vary just as much as the work itself. Abe's woodworking roots fit naturally with an old farmhouse or warm country home. However, Day One Specialties can also build toward clean, contemporary and modern designs.
Ultimately, the style should reflect the homeowner. The look may change from one project to another, but attention to the build remains essential.
The House Matters. So Does the Homeowner.
Construction is personal. After all, you are trusting someone with your home, your money and a project that may have been planned for years. Day One Specialties takes that responsibility seriously.
Straightforward Conversations From the Start
A good project begins with communication. Therefore, the goal is to understand what you want before deciding how to build it. Clear conversations also make it easier to compare materials, features and practical options.
Respect for the Project and the Budget
Being practical matters too. The objective is to help homeowners understand their options and make informed choices. That way, the budget can be directed toward the parts of the project that matter most to them.
Whether the job involves custom furniture or an entire new home, good craftsmanship should come with a good working relationship. In the end, both matter to the finished experience.
